Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and forward-thinking Data Scientist to lead and drive critical data science initiatives. In this role, you will contribute to and shape our advanced analytics capabilities, deploying state-of-the-art machine learning and data science methodologies to solve high-impact problems across the FedEx network. You’ll serve as both a technical leader and a hands-on contributor, translating complex business needs into scalable models and solutions. Your work will touch every corner of the business—from strategic planning to operational enhancements and new product development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Spearhead advanced data science initiatives and lead the development of machine learning and optimization models

  • Apply innovative modeling techniques, including descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics

  • Champion cutting-edge methods and stay ahead of industry trends in machine learning, AI, and large-scale analytics

  • Design and develop APIs and services in line with modern architectural standards (API-first and service-oriented architecture)

  • Leverage best practices in MLOps and CI/CD to ensure repeatable, scalable, and reliable model deployment

  • Guide and mentor junior data scientists, fostering technical excellence across the team

  • Work collaboratively with engineers, analysts, product managers, and external partners to deliver enterprise-level solutions

  • Scale solutions from prototypes to production-ready applications

  • Promote cross-functional collaboration across business units, IT, engineering, and external partners

  • Institutionalize best practices, templates, and code libraries for future use

Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong academic background in a quantitative discipline such as computer science, statistics, mathematics, operations research, or a related field

  • Proven track record of applying data science and machine learning to drive real-world results

  • Experience deploying optimization or ML models using cloud infrastructure and modern tools

  • Comfort working across a range of environments, from rapid prototyping to large-scale production deployments

  • Strong programming skills and experience with source control tools in a collaborative environment

  • Deep theoretical knowledge in linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistical modeling

  • Expertise in one or more of the following tools/languages:

    • Languages: Python, R, Scala, Java, C++

    • ML Frameworks: TensorFlow, PyTorch, XGBoost, scikit-learn, MLlib

    • Data Engineering & Tools: Spark, Databricks, MLFlow, Kafka, Hadoop, Hive

    • Optimization Solvers: Gurobi, CPLEX

Eligibility and Locations

  • This is a remote-friendly position within the U.S., with flexibility based on business needs

  • Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States

Minimum Qualifications

Data Scientist II

  • Master’s degree in computer science, statistics, applied math, or related discipline

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in analytics, data science, or operations research

  • Proficiency in building data pipelines and analysis workflows to support business needs

  • Familiarity with the full analytical lifecycle from data acquisition to presentation

  • Experience working in cross-functional teams and delivering practical insights

Data Scientist III

  • Master’s degree required; PhD preferred in a quantitative field

  • 3–4 years of experience (or equivalent academic background) applying data science techniques at scale

  • Deep expertise in machine learning model development and end-to-end analytical processes

  • Strong understanding of transportation/logistics, market trends, and emerging technologies

  • Demonstrated leadership within project teams or consulting engagements

Salary & Benefits

  • Compensation Range: $82,240 – $167,520, depending on experience, location, and role level

  • Eligible employees may also receive bonuses or other forms of incentive pay

  • Comprehensive benefits package includes medical, dental, vision insurance, retirement plans, and tuition reimbursement
