As our company expands, we are seeking a Data Engineer / Database Administrator who excels at building high-performing infrastructure, optimizing data workflows, and maintaining robust databases in a high-availability, always-on environment. Based in Washington, DC, this hybrid role combines hands-on database administration with the opportunity to shape and modernize our evolving data ecosystem.


About the Role

As a critical member of our engineering team, you’ll play a dual role—supporting operational reliability while leading data architecture transformation. From modernizing legacy systems to building advanced data platforms, your work will enable analytics and innovation throughout the organization.


Your Responsibilities

Database Administration

  • Oversee and maintain MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL databases to ensure top-tier performance, reliability, and data consistency

  • Implement and manage backup, disaster recovery, and high availability strategies to minimize downtime

  • Ensure compliance with SOC 2, GDPR, and internal security policies

  • Improve system efficiency through query tuning, indexing, and stored procedure optimization

  • Conduct capacity planning and provide infrastructure improvement recommendations

Data Engineering

  • Develop and maintain ETL pipelines and automated workflows to support both analytics and operational functions

  • Design scalable data models and warehousing solutions

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to reduce reliance on database-stored logic

  • Partner with product and analytics stakeholders to deliver business-aligned data solutions

  • Implement best practices around data governance, metadata management, and quality control

Innovation & Collaboration

  • Enhance and support CI/CD pipelines for data systems and deployments

  • Lead the automation of routine tasks across database and data engineering functions

  • Contribute to designing modern, cloud-based architectures using Azure and other technologies

  • Assist in resolving database performance and connectivity issues in a 24/7 production environment


What You Bring to the Table

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience in both database administration and data engineering

  • Proficient in MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL

  • Solid experience with data architecture, ETL design, and data modeling

  • Practical knowledge of cloud platforms such as Azure

  • Familiar with DevOps methodologies, including containerization, Infrastructure-as-Code, and CI/CD

  • Skilled in query optimization, indexing, and performance tuning

  • Scripting knowledge in Python, PowerShell, or similar tools

  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills, particularly in high-pressure, production environments

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with NoSQL technologies (e.g., MongoDB, Redis)

  • Experience in real-time data tools such as Apache Kafka or Apache Spark

  • Background working in mission-critical, 24×7 operations

  • Knowledge of data security tools including encryption, masking, and RBAC (Role-Based Access Control)

  • Exposure to BI platforms, monitoring, and dashboard tools
